“My Spiritual Sensitivity Disappeared!” How to Restore It: A Spiritual Perspective

From a spiritual perspective, some people may feel that their spiritual sensitivity has disappeared and wish to regain it.

Among young children, there are stories of friends who can see ghostly children, but it is often said that there is no need to worry when spiritual sensitivity gradually fades.

While not an absolute rule, it commonly occurs that by the time children reach elementary school, their early-childhood spiritual sensitivity diminishes.

For example, spiritual practitioner Hiroyuki Ehara has shared that he possessed spiritual sensitivity as a child and could see people’s auras, which distracted him from his studies. By the time he reached middle school, he experienced a natural fading of this sensitivity.

What Spiritual Sensitivity Really Is

Spiritual sensitivity is something that everyone inherently possesses. Ghosts have consciousness, higher-dimensional beings have consciousness, and people have consciousness—it is the ability to sense the hearts of others.

There is a belief that the deepest parts of people’s hearts are all interconnected, and beyond that, they are connected to the spiritual world.

For example, when shaking hands with someone, you might sense a unique personal aura or feeling—this is a small manifestation of spiritual sensitivity, the ability to feel the heart of another.

Thus, when we say that “spiritual sensitivity has disappeared,” it can mean that the ability to sense the hearts of others has diminished. Often, this occurs when a person feels less need to sense others and places greater value on understanding things within themselves.

However, among elementary school children, there are those who love subjects like music or art. In such cases, this tendency may coexist with spiritual sensitivity as they continue to grow.

When Spiritual Sensitivity Disappears: The Role of Stress

From a spiritual perspective, the disappearance of spiritual sensitivity can also be closely related to stress.

Psychologist Sigmund Freud suggested that whenever humans eat, sleep, or relieve themselves, some level of pleasure is experienced. He called this the “pleasure principle,” emphasizing that humans are naturally driven to seek pleasure.

In extreme terms, one could say that a sense of existence—our awareness that we matter—is equivalent to pleasure. When we feel happiness, we simultaneously experience a strong sense of existence and a strong sense of pleasure.

However, not feeling this sense of existence doesn’t only mean a lack of awareness of being; the body and mind are interconnected, and this can trigger stress as a form of life’s warning signal.

Stress responses place us in a state of either “attack” or “escape” against the source of stress, both of which require energy and can generate energy within the mind and body.

Of course, sometimes one cannot attack or escape, and the next response is often a heightened “defense instinct.” This is similar to being near a wild predator—your body reacts to avoid being detected.

If you move your body, the predator might notice you. Stress may manifest physically as heaviness, lack of vitality in the voice, or sluggishness.

Because the mind and body influence each other, emotional disturbance affects the body, which can cause actions that further impact the mind.

As a result, the ability to sense the heart—spiritual sensitivity—can temporarily shut down. This can lead to a state in which one feels that spiritual sensitivity has disappeared.

Regaining Spiritual Sensitivity: A Spiritual Perspective

There is a spiritual perspective on how to regain spiritual sensitivity once it has diminished.

First, as mentioned earlier, it is essential to recognize that spiritual sensitivity is fundamentally the ability to sense the heart and emotions of oneself and others.

Listening to music that resonates deeply with your heart is also recommended.

People engaged in humanities-oriented activities tend to be more attuned to expressing and feeling emotions, and therefore often have stronger spiritual sensitivity. Taking an interest in humanities-related subjects can support this development.

Creative activities, such as writing novels, are particularly effective because they require careful attention to the human heart. Using a blog or similar medium for such creative work can also be helpful.

Rudolf Steiner, a historical figure known for his spiritual insights, stated that spiritual sensitivity exists in everyone and can be cultivated by anyone. The educational approach he developed, known as “Steiner Education,” is therefore recommended as a reference for nurturing spiritual sensitivity.
